Our Story

Kyle
I finally bought the wedding ring for Haley one night.  I decided to ask Doug for his permission to ask for her hand in marriage.  I tried on Wednesday night after work, although it turns out Kelsey (Haley’s Sister) was having a Basketball party and all the girls where right outside the door.  So that did not work out.  Then the next night, Thursday, all of the Penrod family and me went to a movie then to Pizza machine so we did not get back till late.  The next morning, Friday, Christmas Eve, I came into work early that morning to talk to him but the door was locked and no one was around so that did not work.  Then I got done with work and went to have lunch at Penrod’s with Haley.  After lunch I stayed down stairs by telling Haley I had to go to the bathroom.  I came out after she had went up stairs and Doug was still sitting at the table talking to Debbie and one of the girls so I asked him if he had a file in his room when we got in there I finally asked him and he said yes.  Finally I got his answer so I could ask her now.
I had planned ahead that Doug would say yes and God would have everything worked out so I cleaned up the cattle lot.  I chose the cattle lot to propose because that is the spot where I first met Haley.  Doug had brought her there to show her around the farm and I stayed late that day to clean up the manure in the lot.  Since I had cleaned up the lot and had to get Haley out there with out suspecting anything, I told her I needed help working on one of the waters in the lot.  We headed out there right after I asked Doug.
We ended up leaving and when we showed up I was so nervous and thought to seem legit I had to grab some tools.  I opened the tool box and grabbed a pair of pliers quick realizing that I had a pair on my hip but I did not care.  When we showed up it was snowing and there was a perfect layer of white across the whole lot.  I could not have planned it to be any better it was perfect!  So as soon as I got to the waterer I could not wait any longer I got down on one knee and grabbed her hand!  The look on her face was priceless.  She just kept whispering O my Gosh, O my Gosh.  I said, “It was right here that I met you 650 days ago and started our memories together and we have been dating for 566 days I have loved every minute of it and was wondering if we could start our next step here Will You Marry Me!  She gave a slight nod and grabbed me pulled me up and kissed me.  After the kiss I asked so is that a yes and she said yes.  More kissing.

I had been a little suspicious around Christmas time that Kyle might propose because whenever I asked him when we should exchange presents he would change the subject. But I didn’t want to be disappointed if he didn’t propose, so I kept telling myself “no, he’s not going to propose, don’t even think about it!” On Christmas Eve Kyle came over to my house right before lunch. He said he needed my help at the farm fixing something. I agreed to go and we ate lunch before we went. Kyle was very quiet throughout lunch, and when I asked if he was ok he said he was feeling a little sick. He hardly ate any lunch, so I thought he must have been sick! After eating I went upstairs to get my coat, and Kyle said he was going to go to the restroom. He came up to my room about ten minutes later (like I said, I thought he was sick) to get me and we went out to the truck. He opened my door for me like he always does (Thanks for raising such a gentleman, Ed and Karen!) then walked around to his side. He very carefully removed his coat that was lying on his seat and we were off (little did I know that the coat was covering a small box with my Christmas present in it!).
On our drive to the farm all I could think about was “the farm is where Kyle and I first met, it would be so cute if he proposed here – NO! Don’t get that thought in your head! Don’t set yourself up for disappointment! He’s not going to propose!!” We got to the farm and Kyle said he needed my help fixing a waterer in the feed lot. We got out of the truck and all I could think was “the feed lot is literally where we first met! No! Shut up Haley!” Then Kyle got a pair of pliers out of the toolbox and I thought “Oh, pliers, he really does just need my help. Ok, not a proposal, that’s ok.” We went to the feedlot as big fat flakes of snow fell gently to the ground. Our footprints were the only imperfections on the layer of perfect white snow on the ground. I followed Kyle to the waterer and in one motion he set his pliers down and got down on one knee. I said “Oh my gosh” as he pulled a small box out of his pocket. I stared at him as he opened it  and began to speak… Now, what he said I don’t know. Even as he was speaking I wasn’t able to  comprehend the words he was saying. I just kept staring at him and saying “oh my gosh, oh my gosh” over and over. When Kyle finished speaking I kissed him. And again. And again. And maybe again. Then he said, “Does that mean yes?” and I said “YES!” Once I had the beautiful ring on my finger – and maybe after a few more kisses – we headed back to the truck to call our families and friends and share our exciting news!
...Even with all my suspicions and my hopes that Kyle would propose I really was one hundred and ten percent surprised when he got down on one knee. Best Christmas Ever!
